GOLFER Glenn Niciejewski has done it again, claiming victory in his category of the Blind Golf Australia Open Championships in Western Australia.
Held at Collier Park in Perth, the Australian Championships was preluded by the Western Australian Open, in which Niciejewski came runner up in his B1 – totally blind – category.
Niciejewski said he was disappointed with the result, as he was leading the field across all blind and visually impaired golfers at the Australian event until a bunker saw him come undone on the 17th hole.
“I was winning – I was under par – until I got to the 17th hole – a par five,” he said.
“I was there 80m out with a nine iron in my fourth, and I shanked it right.Where did it go, into the bunker, I hit it too soft.
“Seven shots out of that bunker… that’s where I lost it.”
Niciejewski then had birdie on the final hole, but lost the tournament across all categories by five.
He still managed to place as overall net winner for B1 after his handicap of 53.
The Championship was the final competition for the year, with Niciejewski to next compete in Victoria in March.
Niciejewski is now also ranked fourth on the order of merit.
Niciejewski is ably assisted by his caddy, Scott Downing, without whom he says he would not be able to play golf.
